In painting, a still life is an arrangement of ordinary objects — fruit, flowers, a jug on a table. In this room the objects are cherries, lemons, bells, horseshoes and lucky sevens: the vocabulary of the classic British fruit machine, arranged with care.
These are the most familiar works in the gallery and the quickest to read. They are a good place to understand how reels, lines and symbols work before exploring the more elaborate rooms.
It is also the largest room in the collection.
